The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Federal Government permission to shield the identities of witnesses testifying against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
Justice James Omotosho approved the request, allowing witnesses to testify behind screens with their names replaced by acronyms.
The Federal Government Team led by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, argued the measure was necessary for security reasons which Kanu’s legal team, led by former Attorney-General, Kanu Agabi, did not oppose.
The trial has restarted following its reassignment to Justice Omotosho after previous judge Binta Nyako stepped down over allegations of bias.
Kanu, first arrested in 2015 and later re-arrested in Kenya in 2021, has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of treasonable felony and remains in the custody of the Department of State Services.
