The federal government has launched the National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria (NBAN) in Lagos to expand internet access and drive economic growth.
The initiative brings together government and private sector stakeholders to improve broadband penetration, with a goal of reaching 70% coverage by 2025.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, represented by Executive Vice-Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, said broadband is key to Nigeria’s digital future.
He noted that penetration has grown from 6% in 2015 to 42% by October 2024, but challenges like infrastructure gaps and affordability remain.
While highlighting the government’s plan to deploy 90,000 km of fibre optic cables nationwide, for minimum speeds of 25 Mbps in cities and 10 Mbps in rural areas by 2027, he said NBAN will support education, healthcare, finance, and governance through improved digital access.
