79TH UNGA :VP SHETTIMA TO LEAD NIGERIA’S DELEGATION
PRES
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will skip this year’s United Nations General Assembly, sending Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent the country in New York.
Tinubu, who recently returned from visits to China and the United Kingdom, has decided to remain in Nigeria to address domestic issues, including severe flooding, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s statement to the General Assembly and attend key meetings on the sidelines of the event, scheduled from September 24 to 28.
The General Debate will focus on peace, sustainable development, and human dignity.
This marks the first time in recent history that a Nigerian president has missed the world’s largest diplomatic gathering. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations held its General Assembly virtually for the first time, with then-President Muhammadu Buhari delivering Nigeria’s address remotely.
