The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the Market Authority Bill for its second reading, with the House Committee on Local Government expected to report on the bill within two weeks.
If passed, this legislation aims to regulate the registration, formation, and operation of markets across Lagos State.
At the plenary presided over by Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa chairman of the local government committee, Sanni Okanlawon said the bill will ensure mandatory registration for all markets, formation of a Market Board and Advisory Council, Provisions for market cleanliness and effective management and Measures to address traffic congestion caused by market activities.
Legislators highlighted that the bill would help eliminate arbitrary self-appointed titles among traders and ensure only reputable individuals hold positions in market leadership.
