Tunisian President Kais Saied announced a major cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, appointing 19 new ministers just weeks before the October 6 presidential election.
Key changes include Khaled Shili as the new Defence Minister and Mohamed Ali Nafti as the Foreign Affairs Minister.
This shake-up follows Saied’s earlier decision to dismiss Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani, replacing him with Kamel Maddouri.
The presidency’s statement provided no further explanation for the abrupt changes.
Saied, who was democratically elected in 2019, has referred to his re-election bid as part of a “war of liberation and self-determination” to establish a new republic.
However, his tenure has been marked by a controversial power grab in 2021, with several political opponents now imprisoned or facing prosecution.
