PRESS STATEMENTDate: July 29, 2024*AJEGUNLE PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT (APM) SUPPORTS THE AUGUST 1ST PROTEST AGAINST BAD GOVERNANCE AND HUNGER** We Support the Democratic Right of Residents to Peaceful Protest* We Warn Local Government Security Networks not to Attack Protesters The Ajegunle Peoples Movement (APM), a community campaign platform formed by the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM), announces its full support for the planned protest against bad governance and hunger slated to commence on August 1, 2024.Ajegunle, a local government area with a significant number of impoverished residents, has borne the brunt of the disastrous policies of the ruling APC-led government. Since the announcement of the fuel subsidy removal and other anti-poor capitalist economic policies by President Tinubu, the living conditions in Ajegunle have drastically worsened. Additionally, the residents of Ajegunle have suffered from extreme impoverishment under the administration of Executive Chairman of the local government, Hon. Ayoola Adekunle Fatai, who has diverted essential palliatives meant for the poor to their caucus party members. We hereby issue a stern warning to the Ajeromi, Tolu, Trinity, and Pako Police Stations to uphold their duty of protecting the residents of Ajegunle who will be joining the protest against bad governance and hunger. We remind the police and the local government officials not to repeat the heinous crimes committed during the #ENDSARS protests of October 20, 2020, when they perpetrated violence against peaceful protesters. We have it on good authority that during the ENDSARS protests, APC thugs were involved in looting the local government and attacking protesters as well as residents of the community. Furthermore, we express our deep concerns about the newly launched AJIF security committee led by Chairman Otunba Nurudeen Adejiyan-Ojora and Secretary Mr. Michael Jeje Ojobara. This committee lacks accountability and transparency required for such a role. They must not substitute themselves for the constitutional duties of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF). Residents of Ajegunle have had to secure their community through their hard-earned money, while Otunba Nurudeen Adejiyan-Ojora has failed to assist in these community efforts. All these and more are the reasons why the forthcoming peaceful protest is important for the mass of Ajegunle residents who have suffered for too long under the anti-poor policies of government whether at national, state or local levels. Therefore, we urge all residents of Ajegunle to come out in large numbers on August 1st to freely express their grievances against hunger and bad governance.Moshood, Oshunfurewa AdebolaCoordinator, Ajegunle Peoples Movement (APM)08035936663
