The Federal Government has admitted there is food scarcity in the country as a result of insecurity, global warming and other factors, assuring that the situation is being addressed and the prices of commodities will soon come down.
Minister of State for Agriculture Aliyu Abdullahi speaking to newsmen today stated that had in the past relied more on rainy season farming but this year’s rainy season came with heavy floods which destroyed many farm yields, contributing to hike in food prices.
Abdullahi also reiterated the federal government in its engagements with state governments and other stakeholders has highlighted areas of focus including food production to meet local production and food storage capacities, to cushion the effect of food shortage.
Food inflation has reached over 40 per cent in recent months according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), pushing the prices of essential commodities beyond the reach of millions of Nigerians.
