President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa is set to miss this week’s Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy, as his party continues to search for partners to govern the country.
Ramaphosa’s African National Congress (ANC) is holding talks with a wide range of other parties, saying it wants to form a national unity government after losing its majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in last month’s election.
Meanwhile, the country’s National Assembly will hold its first sitting after last month’s election on Friday, when new lawmakers will be sworn-in by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
Zondo will then preside over the election of the speaker of the National Assembly, who will oversee the election of the deputy speaker and then the election of the country’s next president.
