Germany’s Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has expressed reservation over the new cannabis law, arguing that the country’s previous drug policy had failed and led to a black market.
Lauterbach’s comments follows the activation of a new law, decriminalizing the personal use of cannabis, permitting adults in Germany to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis and cultivate up to three marijuana plants at home.
German Police Union (GdP), also voiced concern over the implementation of the new law, with the union’s deputy federal chairman, Alexander Poitz, expecting problems with controls.
Poitz said the union is concerned about regulating the consumption of cannabis within the permitted distance to certain facilities, warning that lack of precision scales or other instruments to enforce the law may become a challenge.
Earlier, Canabis users took over Berlin to celebrate the law, describing it as victory for the masses.
