The Nigerian House of Representatives has advocated for compulsory drug testing of secondary school students nationwide following rising youth substance abuse.
A motion sponsored by Olanrewaju Oshun of Lagos Mainland stated that drug addiction among young Nigerians is becoming a major public health issue.
Oshun cited how screening programs overseas have successfully deterred student drug use and identified those needing rehabilitation. Hence, he put forward the adoption of Random Student Drug Testing locally.
The motion was unanimously approved by House members. Consequently, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have been directed to run more anti-drug abuse awareness campaigns targeting youths.
Additionally, the Ministries of Health and Education must now formulate a national policy for compulsory drug testing in all secondary schools. The related parliamentary committees will monitor progress within four weeks.
