Some of former President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans have criticized him for saying he would not want to protect NATO members from a future attack by Russia if those countries failed to pay their contributions.
Trump made the remarks during a political rally in South Carolina.
The remarks were strongly criticized by the White House which called them appalling and unhinged.
Among Trump’s critics are Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley who described the remarks as irresponsible and reiterated a warning for the US to never side with Russia.
NATO estimates have shown that only 11 of 31 members are spending at the target level.
