Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have congratulated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy on their election victory affirmed by the Court of Appeal.
The lawmakers also said the National Assembly’s electoral committee needs to address issues like delay in voter registration and the high number of election cases handled by Appeal Courts.
The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat-Meranda, who presided over the plenary, agreed that voter registration should be continuous to accommodate more eligible voters. She suggested INEC request ID when registering voters to verify residency.
Earlier, the Committee Chairman on Judiciary, Hon. Ajomale Oladipo, identified delayed registration and post-election legal matters as challenges. He said Appeal Courts face many cases after elections, causing judgement delays.
Other lawmakers suggested increasing awareness about the electoral review, accommodating diaspora voting, and addressing situations where non-residents temporarily stay to vote before leaving. The lawmakers agreed electoral system issues need addressing ahead of the next elections.
