18 Year Old High School Graduate Emerges Youngest Black Mayor in Arkansas City

An 18-year-old Jaylen Smith who graduated from high school in May has been elected as mayor of Earle, Arkansas.

Smith defeated his opponent, Nemi Matthews, the city’s street and sanitation superintendent, by 235 votes to 185 according to unofficial results from the Crittenden County Clerk’s office.

When officially confirmed, he will be the youngest Black mayor elected in the United States.

He will be sworn in during the first week of January.
