The Political tension in Tunisia reached a new peak on Wednesday as a Court sentenced presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel to six months in prison for falsifying documents.
Zammel was sentenced to 20 months in prison, last week on charges of popularizing fake endorsements.
Briefing newsmen on the charges, Zammel’s lawyer, Abdessattar Massoudi described the judgements as unjust attempts to weaken the Presidential candidate in a bid to keep President Kais Saied in power.
Political tensions in the North African country have risen ahead of the Oct. 6 election since an electoral commission named by Saied disqualified three prominent candidates this month amid protests by opposition and civil society groups.
