The Presidency has affirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to providing 24-hour power supply to higher institutions across Nigeria to enhance education.
This assurance came from the Senior Special Assistant on Students’ Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon, during a visit to the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja.
The recent increase in electricity tariffs has impacted public universities, with some paying between N150 million and N300 million monthly for electricity bills.
To address this, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Power and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), initiated the Energizing Education Programme (EEP) to provide reliable power via solar hybrid power plants. The programme initially targets 37 federal universities and 7 affiliated university teaching hospitals.
VeonewsNG gathered that the Federal Government has already spent over N38 billion on the first phase of the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), delivering reliable power to several universities through solar hybrid power plants.
The programme, which targets 37 federal universities and seven teaching hospitals, is being implemented in phases due to budget constraints. The second phase is set for launch in late 2024, and the third in mid-2025.
Asefon emphasized that uninterrupted electricity is essential for improving the quality of education, attributing the initiative to President Tinubu’s focus on renewing hope for Nigerian students through stable power on campuses.
