Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has secured his Malawi Congress party’s backing for a second term in next year’s election.
However, his chances may hinge on finding a strong alliance partner, as his Party recently lost its key ally, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) which withdrew following the death of its leader, former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, in June.
But Chakwera, in his address to delegates, sounded confident that support for his party which faces criticism for failing to revive the economy has grown since 2020.
Chakwera’s main rival is expected to be former President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party.
