President Bola Tinubu has given a 12-week timeline for eliminating, merging or relocating various government agencies, including the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), Teacher Registration Council (NAFDAC) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
This follows approval to implement aspects of a 2012 reform report on rationalizing public institutions by the Oronsaye committee under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Specifically, the comprehensive report recommended scrapping agencies like National Salaries and Wages Commission, merging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and relocating the National Lottery Trust Fund.
In total, the report proposed cutting statutory agencies from 263 to 161, abolishing 38 like National Mosquito Control, merging 52 entities and transferring 14 more to ministries.
The committee chaired by presidential adviser, Hadiza Bala Usman now has just 12 weeks to undertake the major reorganization.
This agency consolidation aims to eliminate overlaps, reduce overhead costs through synergies and enhance service delivery across government.
Recall that some reports have suggested that this reorganisation would save the Nigerian Government over 2billion naira.
