The Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Hashimu Dungurawa, has dismissed rumours that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dungurawa described the speculation as unfounded, stating that the NNPP has no intention of joining the APC, which he accused of failing Nigerians.

“We don’t have that interest or intention. We see them as enemies of democracy,” Dungurawa said. “Look at where they have led the country. People are waiting for the right time to teach them a lesson at the polls.”

He cited declining APC votes in recent elections from nearly 20 million in 2015 to 8 million in 2023 as proof of the party’s dwindling popularity.

The rebuttal comes after Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas welcomed Kwankwaso’s speculated defection but attached unspecified conditions to his joining the party.

Kwankwaso has yet to comment on the matter.
