At least seven people have been killed in an explosion along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road in Borno State.
The blast, which occurred today, was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device reportedly planted by Boko Haram militants.
The device detonated as a military-escorted convoy transporting passengers travelled through the area, with several injured persons now receiving treatement at a hospital in Maiduguri.
The road, which cuts through the Sambisa forest, has long been a flashpoint for insurgent attacks and was previously closed to civilian traffic for years until it was reopened under strict military escort.
At press time, Governor Babagana Zulum and his entourage were at the State Specialist Hospital where he ordered free treatment for the injured ones.
The Maiduguri-Damboa Road connects the Borno State capital to key local government areas in the south, including Damboa and Chibok.
