Victor Osimhen’s second-half header was not enough as Nigeria drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe denting their 2026 World Cup qualifying hopes.
The Napoli striker broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, meeting Ola Aina’s cross with a glancing finish. However, substitute Tawanda Chirewa levelled late for Zimbabwe, leaving Nigeria fourth in Group C with seven points.
Nigeria started strongly, with Osimhen and Ademola Lookman going close early. Moses Simon was a constant threat but wasted key chances, while Zimbabwe threatened on the break.
After Osimhen’s opener, Nigeria nearly conceded immediately, with the crossbar denying Zimbabwe. Chirewa then capitalised on defensive slackness to snatch a point.
For Osimhen it was his 26th international goal and seventh in World Cup qualifying, moving him past Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s record of six. Only Obafemi Martins (10) has now scored more World Cup qualifying goals for Nigeria.
South Africa lead the group with 13 points after beating Benin 2-0, while Rwanda and Benin sit above Nigeria on eight. The Super Eagles have four games left to revive their campaign.
