According to the 2025 Global Terrorism Index (GTI), released on March 5, 2025, Nigeria has climbed to the sixth position, moving up from the eighth spot in the previous two years. In 2024, Nigeria recorded a staggering 565 terrorism-related deaths, a significant 34% increase from the 533 recorded in 2023. This alarming rise is particularly concerning, especially considering that deaths had previously declined to a low of 392 in 2022, the lowest figure since 2011.
The Sahel region, which encompasses parts of Nigeria, has emerged as the global epicentre of terrorism, accounting for a staggering 51% of all terrorism-related deaths in 2024. Groups like IS-Sahel have expanded their operations, launching attacks across multiple countries, including a notable 16 in Nigeria during the same year.
These developments underscore the persistent and evolving challenges that Nigeria grapples with in its relentless efforts to combat terrorism.
