The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for rehabilitation.
According to a memo dated February 28, 2025, from FAAN’s Head of Operations, J.U. Nwosu, the closure will take effect on March 3 and 4 due to asphalt work at the A2 Taxiway-link. The authority cited safety concerns over protruding construction equipment.
This comes just two weeks after the runway reopened following an 11-month maintenance shutdown. During the closure, the shorter domestic runway, 18L/36R, will handle all flights. FAAN has urged technical departments to maintain security, inspect facilities, and enforce 24-hour surveillance.
Runway 18R/36L, spanning 3,900 meters, was previously closed in March 2023 for what was initially an eight-week maintenance period but extended for months, disrupting flights. However, with Links 2 and 3 of the taxiway now operational, international airlines have an alternative alongside 18L/36R.
