The Vatican has dismissed claims that the Swiss Guard is preparing for Pope Francis’ funeral amid concerns over his health.
Swiss newspaper Blick reported that guards were under curfew in preparation for the Pope’s possible death. However, there has been no official confirmation.
The 88-year-old pontiff was taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital last Friday after experiencing chest pain. Doctors diagnosed a polymicrobial respiratory infection, including pneumonia and asthmatic bronchitis. He is receiving cortisone and antibiotics.
Pope Francis, who previously said he had arranged his burial, has a history of lung issues, having had part of one removed in his youth. His condition remains under close monitoring, though the Vatican has not detailed his response to treatment.
Pilgrims have gathered at the hospital to pray for him. Meanwhile, Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri said the Pope remains calm, adding: “His helm is in the hands of the Lord.”
