Nigeria has lost one of its foremost nationalists and elder statesmen, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo.
In a statement released by Adebanjo’s family, he passed away peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos, on Friday, February 14, 2025. He was 96 years old.
Chief Adebanjo served as the national leader of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political group. He was a distinguished lawyer, politician, and a staunch advocate of true federalism, as well as a key figure in Nigeria’s political history. He also served as the organising secretary of the Action Group. His unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and the fight for a progressive Nigeria remained steadfast until his last breath.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In the statement issued by his family, they expressed deep gratitude for his selfless service to God, the nation, and humanity. “We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice,” the statement read.
The family is currently consulting with his friends, associates, and various interest groups across Nigeria and beyond to finalise arrangements for a befitting funeral. Further details will be announced in due course.
A condolence register has been opened at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
