The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a stern warning to property owners, agents, and private occupiers in the state to stop illegal recycling and scavenging activities in unlicensed facilities.
LAWMA’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, noted that indiscriminate sorting, dumping, storing, and trading of recyclable waste in public spaces and private properties violate the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
Gbadegesin stated that such activities degrade the city’s aesthetic appeal, disrupt property rights, and pose serious environmental hazards.
He warned that violators would face strict enforcement measures, including prosecution, facility shutdowns, and revocation of property rights for landlords who permit such activities.
In a related development, LAWMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, dislodged squatters and illegal recyclers at Ijora-Olopa under the bridge.
Gbadegesin affirmed that the enforcement exercise would continue across the state as part of the zero-tolerance policy for waste violations.
