Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Prof. Usman Yusuf who is facing corruption charges has premised his recent ordeal on his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Yusuf who is a Professor of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and charged with five counts of alleged embezzlement and abuse of office during his tenure at the NHIA in 2016 to which he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
But yesterday, he was remanded in the Kuje Correctional Facility pending a bail hearing on February 27.
In a lengthy reaction, Yusuf described his arrest as an attempt by the Tinubu administration to silence him for his public criticisms, particularly regarding Nigeria’s relationship with France and other policies.
He also revealed that he and his family had been under surveillance since he began criticising the government, with his ordeal intensifying after his participation in the Northern Youths Summit in Bauchi last month.
