Brazil has formally announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the BRICS alliance, making it the ninth partner to join the group, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
In a statement, Brazil highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance, citing its position as Africa’s most populous nation and one of the continent’s leading economies. “Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS, actively contributing to South-South cooperation and global governance reform—key priorities under Brazil’s BRICS presidency,” the statement read.
Initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS expanded its partnership framework at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
Nigeria’s entry had been widely anticipated following earlier reports and support from foreign affairs officials.
