The Federal Government has approved a telecom tariff increase but rejected the 100% hike proposed by mobile network operators.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani made this announcement following a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesdsay.
The Nigerian Communications Commission is finalising consultations with telecom companies and will announce the revised rates in coming weeks.
He also revealed plans to increase direct investment in telecom infrastructure, rather than relying solely on private sector funding.
Dr. Tijani assured that the increase would be significantly lower than requested, balancing consumer protection with sector investment needs.
NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, confirmed the rejection of the 100% increase and announced plans to simplify pricing models to address concerns about hidden charges.
Meanwhile, telecom operators, including Airtel, defended their request citing rising operational costs.
