Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has suggested that NATO membership for parts of Ukraine still under Kyiv’s control could provide a pathway to halting the intense fighting with Russia.
In an exclusive interview newsmen yesterday, Zelenskyy outlined a potential ceasefire arrangement where NATO’s protection would act as a deterrent to further Russian aggression, while diplomatic efforts could later focus on reclaiming occupied territories.
He noted that NATO’s recognition of Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders would be essential, even if parts of the country remained temporarily outside the alliance’s jurisdiction.
Zelenskyy said a ceasefire was needed to “guarantee that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin will not come back” to take more Ukrainian territory.
