Investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo has been detained by the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt without clear explanation.
FIJ noted that Soyombo went incommunicado on November 26th, with his organisation confirming his military detention through multiple sources.
“He has been incommunicado for three days and we have to investigate as a team. Earlier this morning, we got the notification from multiple sources within the military that he’s in their custody and that’s all we have for now,” said Daniel Ojukwu, a staff of FIJ.
The journalist is known for his recent critical reporting on smuggling and customs service issues.
Recently, Soyombo alleged that customs personnel had conspired with a smuggler, to illegally pass about 2000 cars containing bags of rice into the country.
This arrest also follows previous warnings that state security services were targeting Soyombo.
But the Nigerian Army has not yet responded to requests for comment on this developing story.
