Chaos erupted in Onitsha, Anambra State, as an irate mob set ablaze two revenue touts allegedly responsible for a fatal accident.
The incident occurred at Old Market Road, where revenue agents reportedly pursued a tipper driver over unpaid levies. In the process, they dragged his vehicle’s steering, causing him to lose control and fatally hit a bystander.
Enraged residents apprehended two of the agents, beating and burning them alive, while four others managed to escape. Eyewitnesses condemned the agents’ actions, attributing multiple deaths in recent years to similar practices.
“This madness must stop. These revenue collectors have caused more harm than good,” a witness lamented.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement swiftly intervened to restore order.
He assured the public of ongoing investigations to address the root causes and prevent future tragedies.
