A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Peter Obafemi, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III, on the occasion of his 79th birthday.
In a personal statement on Saturday, Obafemi lauded Oba Adejugbe’s foresight and exemplary leadership, which he credited with transforming Ado-Ekiti into a thriving state capital. He praised the monarch’s instrumental role in the formation of Ekiti State, acknowledging his contributions to the unity and progress of the region.
“As we celebrate Oba Adejugbe’s 79th birthday, we honour his unwavering commitment to the development of our dear state and his visionary leadership that has positively impacted countless lives,” Obafemi stated.
The PDP stalwart used the occasion to advocate for constitutional roles for traditional rulers in Nigeria. He aligned with the position of the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Benjamin Kalu, emphasising the need for security of office for monarchs, protected by the constitution rather than local government chairmen, governors, or the president.
Obafemi argued that empowering traditional institutions would strengthen governance at the grassroots. “We have too many ungoverned spaces in Nigeria, if we allow traditional rulers constitutional responsibility in the areas of security, economic policy implementation, and administration of justice, it will make governance more effective and inclusive,” he said.
He urged lawmakers to prioritise legislation that formalises constitutional roles for monarchs, recognizing their importance as custodians of culture and vital partners in community development.
The PDP chieftain concluded by wishing the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti continued good health, wisdom, and prosperity as he marks another milestone in his remarkable journey.
