Consumers of sugar now have to exercise caution as the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has uncovered substandard and unregistered sugar products in markets in the South-West and North-East.
FCCPC spokesperson, Ondaje Ijagwu, who disclosed this, said the fake products are particularly smuggled brands from Brazil, including Grupo Moreno, Terous, USI S. Joao, Alvean, and Arapora Bionergia.
He said the products were smuggled through Nigeria’s porous borders, particularly from neighboring countries, including Cameroon and Benin Republic.
Ijagwu said the substandard sugar brands often lacked proper labeling, including production and expiry dates, and failed to meet mandatory Vitamin A fortification requirements, thereby posing serious health risks to consumers.
