As we celebrate International Men’s Day 2024, it’s essential to reflect on the progress and challenges faced by men in Nigeria.
According to data from the National Population Commission (NPC), the life expectancy for men has seen a significant increase over the years.
In 2022, the expected years of living for men was 54.9, compared to 49.6 in 2006—a difference of 5.3 years.
This improvement highlights advancements in healthcare and living conditions, yet it also underscores the ongoing need for focused health interventions and support systems for men.
For women, the average life expectancy at birth in 2022 was 59.6 years, up from 53.8 years in 2006. While both genders have seen improvements, the gap between male and female life expectancy remains, pointing to specific health and social challenges that men face.
Positive Male Role Models: A Theme for Change
This year’s theme, “Positive Male Role Models,” stresses the importance of fostering open conversations about men’s mental health and creating supportive environments where men can thrive.
Positive male role models play a crucial role in shaping the identities and behaviors of younger generations, helping them build positive self-images and avoid harmful stereotypes.
International Men’s Day global digital coordinator, Warwick Marsh states, “Positive male role models are crucial for personal and societal growth. They shape identity by teaching young men that masculinity is a wonderful gift and that there is no such thing as toxic masculinity. No gender has a monopoly on vice, only the reality of either good or bad people”.
Founder of International Men’s Day, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, adds, “International Men’s Day has the potential to become the global medium to heal our world. The concept and themes of International Men’s Day are designed to give hope to the depressed, faith to the lonely, comfort to the broken-hearted, transcend barriers, eliminate stereotypes and create a more caring humanity”.
Fostering Mental Health and Supportive Environments
Addressing men’s mental health is a critical aspect of this year’s theme. Societal pressures often discourage men from expressing their emotions or seeking help, leading to feelings of isolation and higher rates of mental health issues.
By promoting positive male role models and encouraging open dialogue, we can help break down these barriers and create environments where men feel supported and valued.
Happy International Men’s Day!
