The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group, ‘Lukarawas,’ in Nigeria’s northwest region and declared nine suspected members of the Lakurawas terrorist group wanted.
The wanted terrorists are; Abu Khadijah, Abdurrahman, Dadi Gumba a.k.a Abu Muhammed, Usman Shehu, Abu Yusuf, Musa Wa’a, Ibrahim Suyeka, Ba Sulhu and Idris Taklakse.
Speaking at a military briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, revealed that the group originated from the Republic of Niger following the recent coup that sacked President Mohamed Bazoum, and disrupted cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.
Maj.-Gen. Buba explained that Lukarawas militants have been infiltrating northern areas of Sokoto and Kebbi States, taking advantage of routes from Niger and Mali.
Buba assured the public that military forces have increased intelligence and surveillance efforts to locate and weaken Lukarawas who are said to be exploiting under-governed spaces to evade capture, hide, and intimidate residents.
Meanwhile, the Defence Spokesman, said some leaders of terror groups operating in the North-central zone already indicated interest in surrendering and laying down their arms.
