The Labour Party has called for the immediate release of its National Vice Chairman, South-East, Ceekay Igara, following his arrest by police, allegedly on the orders of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
In a statement released on Saturday by Deputy National Chairman, Ayo Olorunfemi, the party expressed shock over the incident, which occurred in Aba during a meeting of party leaders.
Igara was reportedly detained without an arrest warrant, a move that has left the Labour Party questioning Otti’s motives.
Olorunfemi criticised the governor, stating, “It is surprising that Dr. Alex Otti, whom the party supported in the 2023 elections, has turned against the leadership.”
The party, while perplexed by Otti’s actions, demanded Igara’s immediate release or his formal arraignment within 24 hours, in accordance with the law.
They also condemned what they termed “political intimidation” by the governor, urging him to stop destabilising the party.
