The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has unveiled plans to hold a public hearing to investigate the frequent collapses of the national power grid.
This comes after a series of outages and grid disturbances affecting several states.
In a statement, NERC stressed the need for a lasting solution, saying, “The Commission shall shortly conduct an investigative public hearing to identify immediate and remote causes of these recurring grid failures.”
The latest grid collapse – the eight in 2024, caused by an explosion at the Jebba transmission station, occurred early in the day but power was restored to most states by 1:00 pm.
NERC expressed concerns about the rising frequency of grid failures, which have reversed some recent gains in grid stability.
Efforts to reform the power sector are ongoing, including the unbundling of the System Operator from the Transmission Company of Nigeria, aimed at improving grid management.
