Lawmakers in the House of Representatives today demanded an immediate reversal of the price increase in petrol and cooking gas.
The motion moved by Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki and sponsored by 111 members of the house said the recent price increases were capable of causing untold hardship and threatening job security.
Moving the motion, Madaki said in recent months, the prices of petrol and cooking gas have “skyrocketed and continue to so do”, creating an “unsustainable financial burden” on ordinary Nigerians.
The legislator added that the unchecked inflationary pressure caused by the increased prices of these essential items “can lead to social unrest, increased poverty rates, and negative long-term”.
The House resolved to urge the NNPCL to boost local refining to reduce the dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
The lawmakers also asked the federal government to “take immediate steps to stabilise petrol and cooking gas prices through targeted interventions such as temporary price relief measures, tax reductions, or subsidies on LPG for low-income households”.
Petrol which sold for N950 last month currently sells for between N988 and N1200 while cooking gas sells for N1500 per kilogramme across Nigeria.
