The United States, France, and several allies have called for a 21-day ceasefire along the Israel-Lebanon border and in Gaza, following intense UN discussions.
The joint statement also signed by Australia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the EU indicated the ceasefire would apply to the “Blue Line” between Lebanon and Israel.
While Israel’s Military Chief has hinted at a possible ground assault despite killing over 600 in airstrikes on Lebanon this week, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon admitted before the statement his side would welcome a ceasefire and preferred a diplomatic solution.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to give a reaction when he arrives in New York Thursday ahead of his address to the U.N. General Assembly Friday.
