The Department of State Services (DSS) is reportedly tracking Fisayo Soyombo, founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), with plans to arrest him, FIJ reports.
An anonymous security source revealed on Wednesday that the DSS is monitoring Soyombo’s location, stating that the arrest could happen “at any moment.”
While the exact reasons remain unclear, Soyombo’s recent investigative work and critical commentary on X (formerly Twitter) are believed to have drawn the DSS’s attention.
His latest undercover report, ‘Undercover As A Smuggler,’ exposed smuggling and arms trafficking involving high-ranking officials, including a Comptroller of Customs, Hussein Ejibunu.
FIJ’s recent investigations included an exposé on First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s receipt of N700 million from the state house for foreign currency purchases for official trips.
Soyombo has faced previous detentions by the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit and the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre after voluntarily responding to police summons.
In 2019, despite an undercover operation in police custody and Ikoyi Prison, the Nigeria Immigration Service considered arresting him but withdrew following public backlash.
