The Federal government plans to restructure the 115 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) into basic and secondary schools.
This was announced by Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, during the annual general meeting of unity college principals in Abuja.
Sununu explained that this restructuring aligns with the National Policy on Education (NPE) and aims to attract more funding to improve infrastructure, address teacher welfare, and create job opportunities.
He assured that the ministry, with support from relevant agencies, will implement these changes quickly.
The minister urged principals to collaborate in enhancing the education sector, curb social vices, maintain discipline, and work with local communities to secure the schools.
The unity schools initiative, which began in the mid-1960s, was designed to promote inter-regional education and reduce tribal divisions with the first three unity schools were established in Okposi, Sokoto, and Warri in 1966.
