As the September 20, 2024, deadline for school fees payment nears at the University of Ibadan (UI), several student groups have launched crowdfunding efforts to support their colleagues.
The University of Ibadan Student Union (UISU), alongside the Faculties of Pharmacy, Nursing, and the Departments of Agronomy, Physiology, and Nutrition Science, have appealed to the public for financial assistance.
UISU’s President, Bolaji Aweda, and Public Relations Officer, Omotayo Olumide, signed a memo requesting ₦50 million to cover the fees of 500 students within four days.
Pharmacy students, under the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students, also requested ₦14 million for 100 of their members, citing the fee hike and economic challenges.
These pleas follow UI’s management-approved fee increase on August 29, which led to peaceful student protests. The protests resulted in the arrest of two students, who were later released on bail.
With exams starting on September 23, students are urging the public for support to prevent anyone from dropping out due to financial hardship.
