The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has instructed all traditional chiefs and leaders in the Benin Kingdom to perform the “Bisusu” ceremony to ward off evil ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Edo State.
According to the Esere of Benin, Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the ceremony will ensure a peaceful and hitch-free election. The traditional ritual involves using sacred items to wave away calamity, which the Oba hopes will prevent violence and electoral malpractice during the election period.
Obamwonyi stressed that the Bisusu ceremony, involving chiefs, Enigie, Ikao, Edionwere, and Igie Ohen of various deities, is a time-honored tradition used to protect the land from evil.
“By directing the chiefs to perform this ceremony, the Oba is invoking traditional powers to ensure a peaceful and orderly election,” Obamwonyi said.
