Nigerian economist and Afenifere chieftain, Segun Sanni, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s government for its lavish spending despite Nigeria’s dire economic situation.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, Sanni urged the government to adopt cost-cutting measures, noting that Nigeria is on the brink of insolvency.
Sanni pointed out that the government’s extravagant expenditures, including ₦90 billion on Hajj, ₦21 billion for a new Vice President’s lodge, and ₦40.6 billion for Aso Rock renovations, are unjustifiable given the country’s economic struggles.
“We are indeed broke, but the government isn’t behaving like it,” Sanni stated. He also condemned the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), calling it the “most corrupt and inefficient organization in the world,” for its unmonitored spending of national resources.
Sanni called for greater financial accountability, stressing that Nigeria must enter “austerity mode” and ensure that every naira is wisely spent to address its economic woes.
