The Nigeria Correctional Service says it is working with sister security agencies to recover no fewer than 286 inmates who fled the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre following severe flooding in the capital city.
Spokesman for the service, Umar Abubakar, disclosed that the Federal Government is working to evacuate the correctional centre.
Already, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is in Maiduguri to assess the flood’s impact on the facility.
In a related development, General Manager of Sanda Kyarimi Zoo Park, Ali Abatcha, told newsmen that no less than 80 percent of animals in the zoo have died, while others have escaped into the city capital.
This aligns with an earlier report by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), indicating that flooding in the zoo has reportedly led to some wild animals, including crocodiles and snakes, escaping their enclosures.
