The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun on Wednesday met with Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi to discuss implementing zero percent duty on selected food imports.
This tax waiver announced by President Bola Tinubu in July aims to address food shortages and curb rising prices by suspending taxes on food imports through land and sea borders from July 15 to December 31.
Edun, via his X stated, “We discussed how to collaborate effectively to make food more affordable and accessible in the short term. This zero-duty measure is temporary, but the administration is focused on long-term strategies to boost domestic food production.”
The waiver applies to maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas.
However, implementation has been delayed. On September 5, customs reported they were still awaiting the list of beneficiaries from the finance ministry to proceed with the duty-free food importation policy.
