Nigeria’s Isau Ogunkunle has secured a bronze medal in table tennis at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, marking the country’s first singles Paralympic medal since Sydney 2000.

Competing in the Men’s Singles Class 4, Ogunkunle’s achievement brings Nigeria’s medal count to five at these Games.

He upset reigning Paralympic champion Abdullah Ozturk of Turkey in the Round of 16 3-1 (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10). and defeated Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Maxime Thomas of France in the quarterfinals 3-1 victory (9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6).

Although Ogunkunle’s gold medal hopes ended in the semifinals against Kim Young-Gun, his performance has reignited Nigeria’s legacy in Paralympic table tennis.

This bronze medal echoes the success of Tajudeen Agunbiade and Alabi Olufemi, who won gold and bronze respectively in Sydney 2000.
