Ugandan activist and politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has disputed claims made by Ugandan police that he was not shot but instead stumbled and injured himself.
The incident occurred on Tuesday in Bulindo, Kira Municipality, where Wine was shot in the leg by police while visiting one of his lawyers.
In a post on his X account, Wine shared video footage of the shooting, countering the police’s statement that he simply stumbled while getting into his vehicle.
His X account handlers criticized the police narrative, stating, “Sadly but not surprising, the Police Statement claimed that our leader Bobi Wine stumbled as he was getting into his vehicle and got injured!”
They also thanked citizens who captured and shared the footage, emphasizing the power of digital documentation.
Wine, who is the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a former Member of Parliament, was reportedly surrounded by police and military forces who began firing live bullets, tear gas canisters, and other projectiles. The shooting left Wine injured, and he was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical care.
The incident has been described by Wine’s supporters as another assassination attempt by the regime of President Yoweri Museveni.
