Spain claimed Olympic men’s football gold on Friday after beating hosts France 5-3 in extra time with Sergio Camello scoring a decisive double in a thrilling final.
A brace by Fermin Lopez saw Spain 3-1 up at halftime, but the hosts stormed back at Parc des Princes, with Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty in the 93rd minute enough to pull France level and force another half-hour of play.
But Camello’s two strikes allowed Spain who lost the final to Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago to become the first European gold medallist in men’s football since 1992.
Spain’s victory also marks a personal double for Fermin Lopez and Alex Baena, who were both part of the Euro 2024-winning squad.
For Thierry Henry’s French team, it is their first team Olympic medal after 40 years, having grabbed the gold at the 1984 Games.
At the victory ceremony, Morocco were awarded bronze after they thrashed Egypt 6-0 in the third-place playoff on Thursday.
The bronze is Morocco’s first Olympic medal in a team sport
