KAMALA HARRIS AND DONALD TRUMP AGREE TO SEPT 10 DEBATE
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have agreed to a 10 September debate on ABC, the network says, setting up the first showdown between the candidates
Earlier, former US President Donald Trump held a rare news conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida
Trump said he wants to debate Harris multiple times, and he had agreed to three dates in September
He also said he was “pretty much recovered” from the wound to his ear after an assassination attempt on his life last month
NICOLA MADURO TEMPORARILY BANS X IN VENEZUELA
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has signed a decree blocking access to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, for 10 days following a public spat with owner Elon Musk.
The two men have traded barbs since Mr Maduro was declared the winner of last month’s disputed presidential election.
Mr Musk has described the Venezuelan leader as a “dictator” and a “clown”, while Mr Maduro has accused Mr Musk of inciting “hatred, fascism, [and] civil war”.
Recent weeks have seen anti-government protests flare up over the election result and hundreds of people have been arrested by Venezuela’s security forces.
The vote, held on 28 July, has been described as “undemocratic” by independent observers, and the main opposition has said it has evidence that its candidate, Edmundo González, won by a wide margin.
US, EGYPT AND QATAR CALL ON ISRAEL AND HAMAS TO RESUME TALKS OVER GAZA
The statement said the three nations had forged a “framework agreement” that had “only the details of implementation left to conclude”.
Israel said it would send negotiators to the proposed talks, which are pencilled in for 15 August in Doha or Cairo. Hamas did not immediately respond.
The renewed diplomatic push will be seen as an attempt to stop regional tensions from spiralling out of control, after Hamas’ leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated last week. Iran, blaming Israel, has vowed a response – though Israel has not commented directly on the killing.
